 Deer Lodge was hit hard economically in the early 80's when I was growing up. First the copper mines in nearby Butte and associated copper smelter in Anaconda closed down. Then, the Milwaukee Railroad went under. This eventually caused many of the businesses in the town to fail. For example, you can see the sign for the Deer Lodge Hotel in the upper right of the picture. This Hotel closed in the mid-80s.
